Proper Build Process

Why it matters

A better garage floor starts below the surface.

A nice finish is only one part of the job. The real difference is the system underneath: concrete prep, primer, a pigmented basecoat, full-flake broadcast, and a protective topcoat. Each stage has a job, and each stage supports the next.

The 4-layer system

Every layer is there for a reason.

This is not a basic paint-on floor. It is a multi-layer, multi-day coating system designed to create a thicker, more forgiving, more durable surface.

Section image

Concrete prep + primer

The slab is mechanically prepared, then primed to help create a strong bond and seal the concrete before the build coat goes down.

Pigmented epoxy basecoat

A 100% solids epoxy basecoat creates body, coverage, and a strong foundation for the decorative flake broadcast.

Full ¼” vinyl chip broadcast

Decorative flakes are broadcast into the wet coating to create the finished look, add visual depth, and naturally hide concrete imperfections.

Protective polyaspartic topcoat

The clear topcoat locks in the flake system and adds chemical resistance, gloss, cleanability, and optional slip-resistant texture.

Installation flow

A cleaner process with better expectations.

This page can be used to set the expectation that quality flooring takes proper preparation, layered materials, and cure time — not a rushed, same-day shortcut.

01Step 1

Grind, repair, clean

We prepare the concrete surface, address problem areas, and create the right profile for strong adhesion.

02Step 2

Prime, coat, flake

Primer and epoxy basecoat are applied, then decorative flakes are broadcast into the wet coating for full coverage.

03Step 3

Scrape, vacuum, topcoat

Loose flake is removed, the floor is cleaned, and the topcoat is applied to lock in the system.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Question

Common Questions About Our Process

Q1

What types of spaces can epoxy flooring be installed in?

Epoxy flooring works well in garages, basements, commercial kitchens, warehouses, retail spaces, and utility rooms. If you have a concrete slab, epoxy is likely a good fit.

Q2

How long does an epoxy floor installation typically take?

Most residential projects take 2-3 days, including surface prep and coating. Larger commercial jobs may take longer depending on square footage and the system being applied.

Q3

Do I need to move everything out of my garage before you start?

Yes. The concrete needs to be fully clear for proper grinding and prep. We recommend removing vehicles, shelving, and any stored items before our crew arrives.

Q4

How long before I can walk on or drive on the new floor?

Light foot traffic is usually possible within 24 hours. Vehicle traffic typically requires a full cure of 48 to 72 hours. We'll give you specific timing based on the product used.

Q5

What is concrete sealing and when is it a better option than epoxy?

Concrete sealing penetrates or coats the surface to repel moisture and reduce staining. It's a good fit when you want protection without a thick coating layer, or when the concrete condition calls for a lighter treatment.

Q6

Does DO Epoxy serve areas outside of Addison?

Yes. We regularly work in Elmhurst, Lombard, Bensenville, Wood Dale, and Itasca. Contact us to confirm coverage for your specific address.

Q7

How do I maintain an epoxy floor after installation?

Epoxy floors are easy to keep clean. Regular sweeping and occasional mopping with a mild cleaner is all most floors need. Avoid harsh chemicals that can dull the finish over time.

Q8

Can epoxy be applied over an existing coating or painted floor?

Usually not directly. Existing coatings need to be removed and the bare concrete properly prepped before a new epoxy system will bond correctly. We assess this during the initial consultation.
